Another piece of our work has made a TV appearance! This time it was a poster for Adult Learners Week that we produced as part of a rebranding exercise. It popped up on Coronation Street a little while back. In fact it actually appeared in the top scene of all time as voted for by the viewers in celebration of 50 years of ‘the street’. Enjoy.

We’re not sure why we didn’t mention this at the time, but a health campaign that we worked on late last year was launched to much media fanfare!

The controversial NHS pilot to provide the contraceptive pill to teenage girls without prescription in pharmacies throughout the London boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth featured a range of items designed here at rehabdesign™. The posters in particular hit the headlines, appearing in many newspapers, on various websites and even on the TV during the BBC news!

We particularly like the Daily Mail’s take on the story and the quotes from Tory MPs Julian Brazier and Nadine Dorries!!

Southwark Council commissioned rehabdesign to produce a brochure to be used by council representatives when they attend conferences across the country. The document will be used to share best practice on community cohesion. Over the years Southwark has achieved much in making our communities stronger and more resilient. They are especially proud of their partnership work with their residents, the voluntary, community sector, the police, the PCT and local agencies.

Community cohesion means working towards a society in which there is a common vision and sense of belonging by all communities, a society in which the diversity of people’s backgrounds and circumstances is appreciated and valued, a society in which similar life opportunities are available to all and a society in which strong and positive relationships exist and continue to be developed in the workplace, in schools and in the wider community.

Adult Learners’ Week is an annual week-long national campaign organised each May by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE). It seeks to engage and inspire people to pursue adult learning - either to catch up on skills not learnt at school, to learn for or at work, or to learn for fun.

It is the UK’s largest learning campaign, and promotes education and training for adults, provides access to information and guidance, motivates more adults to participate in learning opportunities and celebrates the learning achievements of adult learners through regional and national awards. It is a collaborative venture between education and training providers, broadcasters, and national and local government.

The week has the backing of the Department for Education and Skills and the European Social Fund and is also supported nationally and locally by a raft of prestigious organisations as diverse as Prudential, Ofcom, the Office of Communications, Jobcentre Plus, the Co-op, Royal Mail, Ufi/learndirect, broadcasters - including the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV - and City and Guilds.

new_horizons.jpg

rehabdesign were recently commissioned by NIACE (National Institute of Adult Continuing Education) to design and print a 32 page ‘motivational’ magazine. The publication aims to highlight the benefits and opportunities available in learning and to publicise Adult Learning Week, the largest celebration of learning in the UK, and one of the country’s largest ‘not for profit’ campaigns. The purpose of the campaign is to celebrate the achievements of adult learners and in doing so, motivate others to get involved.

New Horizons, is primarily a promotional tool to deliver key campaign messages to the target audience of ‘potential’ adult learners. Presented as a glossy easy-to-read bite-sized magazine, it acts as a call to action for the campaign helpline (learndirect), contains information and advice on learning opportunities, includes tips for gaining employment and training, and highlights success stories; all used at motivational triggers for the reader. It is distributed throughout England via relevant providers and public-facing bodies.

In February 1999, in response to a ground-swell of opinion, the Hillsborough Justice Campaign, wrote to all football clubs in the English and Scottish leagues requesting that they observe a minute’s silence at the game they were to play on 15th April (the tenth anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster). At the same time the group contacted the Chief Executives of the English and Scottish FA’s and the Premier League asking them to endorse the request. Tony Banks, the then Minister for Sport was also informed.

The rationale behind the request was that by observing a minute’s silence, football clubs all over the country would be giving their supporters the opportunity to show a mark of respect to the dead of Hillsborough. It would also offer a gesture of support to bereaved families and survivors whom would derive a tremendous source of comfort.

The response was overwhelming. Both the FA and the Premier League instructed ALL clubs to observe a minute’s silence. The following are extracts from the two organisations:

“I am writing to confirm that the Football Association has informed the participating clubs that there will be a minute’s silence prior to each of the F.A Cup Semi-final ties on 11th April 1999. The Football Association believes that it is particularly significant that a tribute should be paid at the F.A. Cup Semi-final.”
(David Davies, Executive Director, The Football Association)

“In remembrance of all those who lost their lives on that fateful day and as a mark of respect to everyone else who has suffered as a result of the events at Hillsborough , we are asking all our clubs to observe one minute’s silence at their games over the weekend of 17th and 18th April. The whole of football will be united in grief and sadness as we remember the terrible events of ten years ago.”
(Mike Foster, Acting Chief Executive of the FA Premier League)

However, even more pleasing from the campaigns’ point of view was the fact that most clubs responded positively to the request of their own accord and prior to the instructions of the two organisations.

Sadly the one major club that ignored the request was Liverpool. This was in keeping with their policy of ignoring the Justice Campaign. Although they did hold a minute’s silence it was in response to the F.A.’s instruction.

welcome to our website…

rehabdesign was formed in 2001. We are a multi-disciplinary graphic design and print practice based in Brighton (well, Hove, actually). Our team mixes diverse backgrounds, skills and hairstyles, working together to bring out the best in each other and our clients, whatever the project. We take an informal approach to encourage the best and most appropriate ideas, and then apply them with commercial realism. Simple.
